Beyond Boundaries
Learning doesn't stop at school
Beyond Boundaries is STaR's strategy for what comes after high school.
It begins with a simple idea that is too often overlooked: people with disability keep learning throughout their whole lives, and they should be able to access specialist teachers to help them do it.
A great deal of care, funding and educational expertise goes into educating young people with disability or delay, from early intervention (such as Early Years Program) through their school years.
Then, for many, structured learning simply stops at the school gates.
The years that follow are frequently spent participating in "day programs", "community access" or "leisure and recreation". Too often, these programs mean supervision rather than engagement and learning, and time filled rather than skills and capacity built.
Beyond Boundaries is our response. It is a long-term commitment to lifelong learning for everyone, to a better-supported disability workforce, and to smoother, more coordinated transitions into adulthood.
What Beyond Boundaries sets out to do
Our strategy has four connected pillars:
Lifelong learning for adults with disability. Moving towards continued, measurable learning, led and designed by specialist educators.
Disability support workforce development. Building the skills of the people who support adults with disability every day, so that disability support embeds capacity building.
A Post-School Transition Planning Community of Practice. A neutral space where people with lived experience and those with professional expertise learn together to improve the multiple and multidimensional transitions from school to adult life.
Research, evidence and evaluation. Tracking what works, measuring skill maintenance and generalisation over time, and sharing findings to inform sector reform and influence daily practices.
